Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Canada in December, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney saying that India and Canada are making good progress toward a new trade agreement. The development comes as both countries work to strengthen their economic relationship.
Carney said the two sides are working toward completing a trade agreement by the end of 2026. The negotiations are focused on building a stronger and more comprehensive economic partnership between India and Canada.
The two countries formally resumed discussions toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) earlier this year, with leaders setting an objective of concluding negotiations by the end of 2026.
India’s major exports to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood and electronic goods. Canada, meanwhile, supplies India with products including pulses, coal and fertilisers.
The proposed trade framework could provide a broader structure for expanding two-way commerce and investment.
Carney said he is looking forward to hosting Modi in Canada in December. The expected visit would provide an opportunity for the two leaders to discuss the trade negotiations and wider bilateral economic ties.
The timing also coincides with the G20 Summit in December, where the two leaders are expected to have an opportunity for further engagement.
Recent India-Canada discussions have also included areas beyond traditional merchandise trade. According to Reuters, energy cooperation, including Canadian LNG, nuclear supply chains and critical minerals, has featured in the broader economic discussions.
