Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on his birth anniversary, remembering his long public career and service to the nation.
In a post on X, PM Modi said Dr. Singh spent many years in public life and served the country with dedication.
Dr. Manmohan Singh was born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, West Punjab, in the Punjab province of undivided India.
He completed his Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University in 1954. He later received a First Class Honours Tripos in Economics from the University of Cambridge in 1957 and a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford in 1962.
Dr. Singh began his academic career at Panjab University, Chandigarh, before becoming Professor of International Trade at the Delhi School of Economics in 1969.
He subsequently held several senior government positions, including Chief Economic Adviser, Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs and Member Secretary of the Planning Commission.
He also served as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1982 to 1985.
Dr. Singh served as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996. His role in India’s economic reform programme during this period remains an important part of his public career.
His contributions to economics and public administration also earned him several honours, including the Padma Vibhushan in 1987.
Dr. Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister on May 22, 2004, and served until 2009. He subsequently served a second term from 2009 to 2014.
During his public career, he received several national and international awards, including the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Award and the Adam Smith Prize from the University of Cambridge.
Dr. Singh passed away on December 26, 2024, at AIIMS Hospital in New Delhi, aged 92.
