Micron to Scale Up Assembly and Testing of Semiconductors at India Unit Multifold Next Year

Micron Technology is set to significantly scale up semiconductor assembly and testing at its Sanand facility in Gujarat next year, as India strengthens its position in the global semiconductor ecosystem.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, speaking at the inauguration of SEMICON India 2026, said India’s semiconductor industry has moved from discussing its potential to actual execution.

Micron began commercial production earlier this year at its Sanand, Gujarat facility, described by Mehrotra as India’s first semiconductor assembly and test facility and the first project under the India Semiconductor Mission.

Finished DRAM and NAND products are now being shipped from Gujarat to customers worldwide with the “Made in India” label.

The company said its current production capacity already exceeds the memory requirements of India’s entire laptop market.

Micron currently employs more than 7,000 people directly in India, while supporting tens of thousands of additional jobs across its wider value chain.

The company designs memory chips through its engineering centres in Bangalore and Hyderabad, assembles them in Gujarat and supplies customers across the world.

Mehrotra said Micron will assemble and test tens of millions of chips at Sanand this year, with production expected to increase significantly next year.

Micron’s engineering operations in India began before the Sanand manufacturing facility.

Its centres in Hyderabad and Bangalore have become an important part of the company’s global technology network.

According to Mehrotra, Micron’s India teams have contributed to more than 3,700 patents, inventions and disclosures, highlighting the country’s growing role in semiconductor research and engineering.

Mehrotra credited the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and ISM 2.0 with providing the semiconductor industry with an important foundation.

The expansion of domestic assembly and testing capacity is part of India’s broader effort to develop capabilities across the semiconductor value chain.

Micron’s Sanand facility represents an important step in connecting India’s engineering talent and manufacturing capabilities with global semiconductor markets.

The expansion comes as demand for memory and storage technologies increases alongside the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence.

Mehrotra said Micron has recorded around 1,400% growth in business, driven by rising demand for memory chips associated with AI.

He emphasised that AI depends heavily on data, while data processing and movement require increasingly advanced memory and storage technologies.

As AI models become larger and more capable, demand is growing for memory that is faster, denser and more power-efficient.
