The Government of India, in consultation with the Union Territory administration of Ladakh, has identified 28 places and geographical features using standard names on the official Survey of India map.
According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, the initiative aims to facilitate the accurate recognition of geographical features and increase public awareness about them.
The 28 identified features cover a range of geographical categories, including peaks, mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes, land areas and water bodies.
Among the named peaks are Atisha Giri, Kanishka Peak, Martand Giri, Zorawar Peak, Rinchen Zangpo, Sakyasri Giri, Marpa Lotsava Ri, Milarepa Kangri, Shiva Ri and Maheshvara Ri.
The identified mountains include Karun Pir, Drak Karpo and Jolmori.
Two passes have been included in the list:
- Chapchingal Pass
- Shachmirk Pass
Two glaciers have also been identified:
- Parpik
- Skamri Glacier
The list includes Shkorga Valley, classified as a valley, along with Yangpa River and Guru Rinpoche, identified as a river and lake respectively.
Hot Spring has been classified as a water body.
Several other features have been identified as land areas, including Brangsa, Kuksel, Dehra Compass, Gogra, Kumarayana Point, Panglung and Shamal Lungpa.
The Government said the additional places and geographical features can be viewed on the Survey of India’s official map of Ladakh.
The standardised identification provides consistent names for the listed features on the official map and is intended to make their recognition easier for the public.
