From Green Stems to Green Enterprises: How Bamboo Is Creating New Livelihoods Across India

A bamboo bag sold at a city marketplace may look like a simple handcrafted product, but its journey can represent a much wider economic transformation.

Across India, bamboo is increasingly moving from traditional village-level crafts into modern businesses, technology-driven manufacturing, sustainable construction and new markets. Government support, policy reforms, Self-Help Groups (SHGs), training and innovation are helping communities turn bamboo into a source of entrepreneurship and employment.

The experience of Vishakha Didi from Assam, whose bamboo enterprise generated ₹2 lakh in sales at the India International Trade Fair 2025, offers one example of this transformation.

Bamboo has supported traditional livelihoods in communities across India for generations. However, its commercial potential was previously affected by regulatory restrictions.

A significant policy change came in 2017, when bamboo grown outside forests was removed from the definition of a tree under the relevant legal framework. This eased restrictions related to the cultivation, transportation and commercial use of bamboo.

The reform created greater opportunities for cultivation, processing, value addition and entrepreneurship, particularly in the Northeastern states where bamboo is closely connected with local economies and traditions.

Vishakha Didi’s journey demonstrates how traditional skills can be combined with new designs and market opportunities.

She joined a Self-Help Group in 2014 and subsequently revived her father-in-law’s bamboo craft enterprise. By introducing new designs and participating in exhibitions with government support, she was able to reach wider markets.

Her bamboo products generated ₹2 lakh in sales at the India International Trade Fair 2025.

Her experience illustrates how market access and product innovation can help traditional artisans transition from local production to broader commercial opportunities.

The bamboo economy is increasingly moving beyond conventional handicrafts.

In Sikkim, near Gangtok, sustainable innovator and fashion designer Chimi Ongmu Bhutia runs the women-led Lagstal Design Studio. The enterprise produces bamboo handicrafts, incense sticks, furniture and interior décor products.

Technology is also playing a growing role. In Tripura, entrepreneur Bijoy Sutradhar has adopted technology to improve bamboo manufacturing.

In Nagaland, SHGs around Dimapur are adding value to bamboo-based food products, while enterprises such as Khorolo Creative Crafts are producing bamboo furniture and handicrafts.

Mamit district in Mizoram is also advancing scientific bamboo cultivation through tissue culture and poly-house management.

Together, these initiatives show how bamboo is developing into a diversified industry combining traditional knowledge, modern design and technology.

A successful bamboo economy requires more than skilled craftsmanship.

Farmers and enterprises need access to:

  • Quality planting material
  • Modern processing technology
  • Training and technical expertise
  • Processing facilities
  • Reliable markets
  • Product design and branding
  • Investment and entrepreneurship support

The National Bamboo Mission focuses on strengthening the bamboo value chain by supporting cultivation, processing and market access for farmers, manufacturers and sellers. It also supports nurseries producing quality planting material.

The economic potential of bamboo extends to agriculture.

In Madhya Pradesh, Vijay Patidar turned to bamboo cultivation after facing repeated losses from conventional farming in 2019.

With support from the bamboo mission, he planted approximately 4,000 bamboo saplings.

Within two years, he earned around ₹75,000 from bamboo pole sales. He was also able to intercrop chilli, capsicum, ginger and garlic between the bamboo plants.

This model shows how bamboo can function as a long-term livelihood asset while allowing farmers to continue other agricultural activities during its growing cycle.

Technology is opening up new applications for bamboo in sectors ranging from construction to manufacturing.

The North East Centre for Technology Application & Reach (NECTAR) has supported bamboo-based technologies in areas including:

  • Food and agro-processing
  • Construction materials
  • Manufacturing machinery
  • Renewable energy
  • Industrial products

According to the source, these interventions have generated employment of around 30 million man-days annually and increased bamboo commodity value addition from approximately 10% to as high as 70%.

One of the most promising developments is the use of engineered bamboo.

Engineered bamboo is produced by binding and compressing bamboo fibres, strips or particles into composite materials. Its applications are expanding in furniture and construction, attracting architects, designers and interior professionals.

More than 42 lakh square feet of engineered bamboo structures have reportedly been built for disaster relief and rehabilitation.

In Chhattisgarh, 576 school rooms have been constructed using engineered bamboo, providing space for around 20,000 children.

These projects demonstrate the potential for bamboo to move into applications traditionally associated with conventional construction materials.

Women are playing a particularly important role in the expanding bamboo value chain through Self-Help Groups and community-based enterprises.

A notable example is the Gadchiroli Agarbatti Project (GAP) in Maharashtra. The project began establishing bamboo-based incense-stick production centres in 2012.

By 2020, the initiative had expanded to 32 production centres, employing around 1,100 people, with nearly 90% of workers being women.

Monthly earnings reached approximately ₹5,000 per woman, while annual employment opportunities increased from roughly 45–60 days to more than 225 days.

The initiative brought employment closer to women’s homes and helped them acquire new skills, confidence and leadership opportunities.
